The Shooting Sports Committee of Greater New York Council’s, in cooperation with members of its Shooting Sports Association, is pleased to announce its 15th annual Firearms Instructor Training Weekend.

Training will be offered on the above weekend that will lead to becoming an NRA certified Rifle Instructor. A Basic Instructor Training Course (BIT), which is required for all new instructors, and instructors who have not taken a BIT course within the last two years, will also be conducted on this weekend.

Additionally, we will be conducting, as required by the NRA, a “Basic Rifle” course, via Zoom presentations prior to our weekend. This training is mandatory to become an instructor.

Our classroom training will be conducted in the Health Lodge in the Headquarters area of Ten Mile River Scout Camps. This is also where you will bunk, and most of our meals will be served.

Ten Mile River Scout Camps is located at 1481 Crystal Lake Road, Narrowsburg, NY 12764. When you turn into camp proceed to the Health Lodge for check-in.

Minimum age to attend this training is 15 years of age.

All candidates must be U.S. Citizens.

Cost: The cost of this weekend for adults will be $350.00, and $125.00 for those under 21 years of age, or currently working on a camp staff. This basically covers all your weekend expenses, to include a Saturday night banquet at a local restaurant. The only thing it doesn’t cover is your NRA certification fees, which are minimal, and which you pay directly to the NRA.

Your certifications will be good for two years before they need to be renewed. The renewal fee for NRA members is currently $30.00, and no additional training is required. NRA membership is not required to take this training, but it is recommended. You can become a member by logging onto the NRA instructor web site at: nrainstructors.org or their main site at: nrahq.org

If interested in attending this training weekend please complete the “Firearms Training Registration Form,” found on the training page of our web site (gnycshootingsports.com) and forward it to James Collins NLT February 11, 2023. Your training fees with be forwarded directly to Council with instructions to follow at a later date.

General Information: While this training is available to all, slots are limited. First priority will be given to those adults scheduled to serve as a Shooting Sports Director, or an Assistant Instructor, on a summer camp staff.

Those individuals not selected to attend this training, due to lack of space, will receive a full refund.

Our training is conducted rain or shine so come prepared. Be prepared for mud.

You’ll be bunking in the Health Lodge, but you’ll need to bring the basics, ie, sleeping bag or a blanket and sheets, a pillow, and a wash kit. Dress is casual. Scout uniforms are not required.
