CALL for NCS volunteer Scoutmasters
We are looking for a few great Scouters to serve as Scoutmasters for National Camping School at TMR the first weekend in June (Friday, May 31st- Sunday, June 2nd.)
With absolutely zero Scouting experience to decades of it, the wide variety of future camp leaders often check into NCS with some level of worry and anxiety, and have questions from the most basic to complex:
-“What tent is mine?”
-“What if I’m not good enough?”
-“What if I don’t fit in”?
-“Where are the showers!?”
-“How do I get to the COPE course from here”?
As a Scoutmaster, your role would be to answer these basic questions about TMR and give them the confidence their own council leaders clearly have in them to send them to NCS in the first place.
How would I provide support?
→ Help them settle in. During check in, you’d be the first to welcome them to your campsite, show them where to sleep, and help form them into patrols.
→ Communicate with admin to ensure they have the basic needs and supplies in their campsites.
→ Use patrol time during the first 3 days of the course to give your patrols the confidence and leadership they need –before you leave on Sunday afternoon and pass full leadership of the campsite to the troop you helped get their footing.
What is NCS?
National Camping School (NCS) is a week-long certification course and considered one of the most prestigious training opportunities in Scouts BSA. With a focus toward training adults on the execution of summer camps, TMR hosts one of the largest courses in the nation.
What is an NCS “troop”?
Most of the time, participants spend time within their “section” (Ecology Directors, COPE Directors, Program Directors, Camp Directors, etc…)
However, they are organized and sleep in campsites by “troops”. Troops consist of participants from a variety of different Sections.
